Mona at #ArtDenver

ArtDenver 2014 was the very first winter show produced by the Cherry Creek Arts Festival held last weekend at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver. It was something exciting and new for Denver fashion – designers were asked to both present in a fashion show and also had booths in which they were selling their designs. This has been done by others, but this is the first time in such a large space as the Convention Center.

Designers such as Mondo Guerra, Geoffrey Mac, Michael Costello and Justin LeBlanc showed along with Brooks, 50 Dresses and other Denver designers, including me.

My Second Day at Denver Art Museum Designer Demos…

a_young_designer_in_the_makingMy second day “demonstrating” design at the Denver Art Museum designer studio was really fun! It was very hard to demonstrate, though, as I got a lot of people coming in to ask questions. I explained the process of haute couture to someone who works at the Denver Art Museum. I found it surprising when a few people asked me if Yves Saint Laurent sewed everything…Hoo, boy, that would take several lifetimes of working 24 hours a day to accomplish that. Makes me think of a Brothers Grimm tale…No, Yves Saint Laurent had the best seamstresses, patternmakers and drapers working with him. All couturiers have only the best. Have trouble sewing on a button? Well, these people do not and they would sew it so perfectly that you would think they had made it as if by magic (almost). Continue Reading →

Pulling it Together for My Demonstration(s) at the Denver Art Museum Designers’ Studio

I’ve been thinking a lot about what kind of demonstration I might do at the Designer’s Studio  at DAM ever since I knew I was going to be doing one  – which was at least 3 or 4 months ago. Even though I get nervous at the thought of doing it, I know that ideas always come to me at the 11th hour and inevitably those ideas that start to flow are a repeat of what’s come before.

I’m no different from other designers. We repeat ourselves. And this is good. As long as the repeat changes a little bit. Like Chanel suits – how many different ways can they be recreated? Ask Karl Lagerfeld – his answer would probably be, “Infinite.” How about Jean Paul Gaultier’s sailor stripe combinations? Or McQueen’s lace? Continue Reading →

Preparations for the Design Studio at Denver Art Museum

I just got back from setting up my designs in the Designers Studio at the Denver Art Museum. Along with 9 other Denver designers, I will be doing design demonstrations during the YSL retrospective. It’s very exciting – I have 7 designs on display along with photographs of my work. The nice crew moved things around a bit, too. Wish I could have a crew moving things around me at my beck and call all the time. Looks great – have a look!

My demonstrations are titled “Inspiration for Fashion” – I’ll probably know in a few days more clearly exactly what I’ll be demonstrating. Probably doing some wearable art techniques, sketching crazy croquis, and playing the Mad Designer! Do come!

I will be at DAM for the next 3 weekends : Saturdays, May 26, June 2, June 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Sundays, May 27, June 3, and June 10th from  11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
