My first day of Demos at DAM

IMAG0018

Today was my first Designer’s Studio demonstration at the Denver Art Museum in conjunction with the YSL Retrospective. It was a long day, starting at 6:30 this morning pulling together the supplies and fabric that I had finally settled on and cutting out a “70’s Jacket” and tracing out from the pattern for my “Hollywood Glam” skirt. I had decided that I would create the jacket and skirt in front of people and begin the process of cutting out appliques, cabbage roses made from fabric, buttons and other such embellishments. I’ve done both pieces before but not with this fabric, which is actually a very fine soft  faux leather – and not with embellishments – so I’m excited to see where this idea takes me. Pulling it Together for My Demonstration(s) at the Denver Art Museum Designers’ Studio

I’ve been thinking a lot about what kind of demonstration I might do at the Designer’s Studio  at DAM ever since I knew I was going to be doing one  – which was at least 3 or 4 months ago. Even though I get nervous at the thought of doing it, I know that ideas always come to me at the 11th hour and inevitably those ideas that start to flow are a repeat of what’s come before.

I’m no different from other designers. We repeat ourselves. And this is good. As long as the repeat changes a little bit. Like Chanel suits – how many different ways can they be recreated? Ask Karl Lagerfeld – his answer would probably be, “Infinite.” How about Jean Paul Gaultier’s sailor stripe combinations? Or McQueen’s lace? Continue Reading →

Preparations for the Design Studio at Denver Art Museum

I just got back from setting up my designs in the Designers Studio at the Denver Art Museum. Along with 9 other Denver designers, I will be doing design demonstrations during the YSL retrospective. It’s very exciting – I have 7 designs on display along with photographs of my work. The nice crew moved things around a bit, too. Wish I could have a crew moving things around me at my beck and call all the time. Looks great – have a look!

My demonstrations are titled “Inspiration for Fashion” – I’ll probably know in a few days more clearly exactly what I’ll be demonstrating. Probably doing some wearable art techniques, sketching crazy croquis, and playing the Mad Designer! Do come!

I will be at DAM for the next 3 weekends : Saturdays, May 26, June 2, June 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Sundays, May 27, June 3, and June 10th from  11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

I will be demonstrating at the Denver Art Museum Fashion Designer studio in conjunction with the YSL Retrospective. The dates are May 26th, 27th, June 2nd, 3rd, June 9th, and 10th. My subject matter will be “Art inspiring fashion”. Check out the Mona Lisa Painting I did on a jacket. The Mona Lisa is a very difficult painting to recreate but it’s also a great learning experience. I’m still working out the details of what the demonstrations will be…
